OWNERSHIP
AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS by Joe Lacroix
The concept of ownership was so important
to our Founding Fathers
that the source for the original wording of the passage
...life,
liberty, and the pursuit of happiness... in our Declaration of
Independence
was authored as "life, liberty, and the pursuit of
property" (Adam
Smith)! The "feeling" that ownership brings with
it incorporates pride,
autonomy, self-sufficiency, and the
potential for a legacy that can't be matched
in other ways.
Developing the sense of ownership among employees in the
work they
do is an important way to develop loyalty and job satisfaction.
By
engaging members of the workforce in the development of written
guidance used
to get the job done, everyone wins and ownership is
enhanced. When we engage
RGB in the job alignment process, there
is often a difference between the priorities
of supervisors and the
priorities of those actually doing the work. The job
description
rarely provides a priority, leaving employees and supervisors to
appropriately talk it out. Therein lies some of the problem.
We know
that workplace language carries different meanings for
a Red dominant versus
a Blue dominant. "When you have
the time..." to a Red dominant often
means the next available
minute, whereas the Blue asking for the work to be scheduled
is
likely to be far more flexible. If a Red dominant supervisor asks,
"When
you have a minute..." they may be standing by waiting for you
to finish
what you are doing. Neither of these approaches is
necessarily wrong, but either
may cause a misunderstanding.
The best alternative is to create written guidance
about how the
job is to be performed, even if there is a formal job description.
Use these written documents as a means of continuing to clarify
expectations.
Avoid the temptation to use documentation as a
"gotcha" when things
go wrong - use them as a continuous navigation
opportunity. It's always best
when you use RGB as the filter that
enables both parties to understand their
own and the other's
tendencies from the outset.

HAMPTON,
VA - SAME DAY SOLUTION! - TEST INITIATED.
There are all sorts of advantages
when engaging Internet technology
in the classroom. QWLC is now testing a link
that connects the
classroom teacher and after school tutors on the same day.
The new
system is in a trial period to help establish it's value and the
most
efficient means of connectivity.
HAMPTON, VA - 21st CENTURY COMMUNITY
LEARNING CENTERS, RETREAT.
Over 40 teachers and tutoring assistants gathered
for a morning of
fun and learning about the RGB and how it impacts learning among
elementary
and middle school students. The participants initiated
an RGB process that will
ultimately enable them to detect Problems
with clearly identified Cues then engage
a Remedy that will
improve learning. The new RGB process is titled "CPR"
(Cues,
Problems, and Remedy) and may well help save a life, although in a
different
way than traditional CPR.
RICHMOND VA - RESEARCH PROPOSAL.
The
CapacityWare Practitioners International Network (CWPIN)
sponsored by QWLC has
submitted a proposal that will help determine
the effectiveness of job training
programs in Virginia and
surrounding states. CapacityWare software will be used
as the
prime analytical engine for this project. It is important to note
that
CapacityWare software is improved each month as new tasks are
undertaken. Many
of the advanced features of this software are
proposed by current users that
envision it taking on increased
workload to help them improve decision-making
quality and reduce
time-consuming redundant processes.
NEWPORT NEWS,
VA - FACILITATION TEAMS COURSE.
Newly graduated facilitators are already engaged
in group
facilitation tasks with the support of CapacityWare literature and
software.
Although group facilitation has often been considered to
be a "touchy-feely"
undertaking, the new generation of facilitators
that engage 21st Century technology
are ready to help organization
leaders tackle the most demanding of workforce
issues. The course
engages a scientific approach to the formerly "soft"
sciences.
<<<<UPCOMING EVENTS>>>>>
NEWPORT
NEWS, VA - RESIDENCY - FEBRUARY 5 THROUGH 9, 2006
The 5-day RGB Certification
Course is filled and the waiting
list has been shifted to the June or August
sessions. The
curriculum covered is highly RGB-based and incorporates the full
use of "Progressive Design" capabilities. Participants receive
the
five-volume Technology Library and learn how the system of
change interacts to
achieve the best organizational results.
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - CAPACITYWARE
TRAINING DAY - JANUARY 31, 2006
CapacityWare training days are divided into two
parts: The morning
focuses on program management topics (BLUE) while the afternoon
dives into software mechanics (RED). Users come with topics of
their own,
but the default topic for January is "CapacityWare links
to Internet Resources"
that save time and enhance effectiveness.
Network relationships (GREEN) are
always enhanced in the process.
<<<<CAPACITYWARE
SOFTWARE TIP>>>>>
The CapacityWare software Main Menu bar has
an option called "Visit"
that many users do not take full advantage
of on a regular basis.
By "clicking" on this feature, as long as your
computer is on line,
the user is taken directly to our Internet connection at
www.LTODI.com. From this connectivity the user can browse to any
number
of useful features including an extensive library of
CapacityWare Literature
available for download. Besides the Main
Menu connectivity, there are also numerous
connections that are
highly targetted - like the one that takes the user directly
to a
list of downloadable agendas that get pasted directly into the Event
Record
at the screen reserved for Agenda creation (time saved).
<<<<VIDEO
INNOVATION>>>>>
The current Facilitation Teams Course will
be the first time we
have produced a video with five opportunities for participants
to
view their own performance on a DVD along side an "ideal"
performance
so they can compare results at any time. Included is
an extensive checklist
to help participants make the best use of
this technique.

<<<<FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS>>>>>
Why
is MS Office Suite required on my PC for CapacityWare to work?
Many of the advanced
features of CapacityWare software interact
with the applications already in MS
Office. The selection of
MS Office was decided early in the design phase for
CapacityWare so
that users could take advantage of cross-walk options. We realized
that MS Office was highly likely to become the standard for
office-oriented
applications. As an example, when events are
registered in the CapacityWare
Event module, they can be
automatically posted to MS Outlook and fully integrated
with normal
calendar and scheduling routines. Each month we link additional
features to save time and frustration for our users.
