UHS Interpretation Guide

UHS Graphic Explanation

The 1998 UHS Profile graphic contains additional features that have not been previously available. These optional features are explained below:

1. Envelope - Turquoise Shaded Area.

Clients have requested a better graphic to explain the area, which represents "most" of the opinions of the survey respondents. The Turquoise Shaded Area is useful to many in that it identifies the minimum and maximum of the Adjusted Mean data points in each of the ten UHS categories. Imagine a single line for each individual that represents the average of that person's responses. If such a line were created for every respondent, the minimum data point and maximum data point would be identified for each UHS element. When those data points are connected and filled, it creates the envelope.

2. True Mean Line.

The True Mean Line is used to graphically depict the true mean calculation in each of the ten UHS categories. The True Mean calculations eliminate survey item consideration for which "no response" has been selected, and are not included in the calculation.

3. Adjusted Mean Line.

The Adjusted Mean Line is used to graphically depict the Adjusted Mean calculation in each of the ten UHS categories. The Adjusted Mean calculations treat the "non-response" as a zero. This is of primary use to organization developers and Realignment Coordinators as a way to account for "non-responses." Two conditions require this approach: where the possibility exists that fear of detection may have resulted in a reluctance to provide a low number, or where the respondent didn't know an answer to an item that the Data Collection Team believed everyone should know that answer.

4. Pearls - Small "Bubbles" Along the UHS Element Axis.

Pearls, when used, allow one to determine the number of survey scale selections registered at each increment intersection along any UHS Axis. The larger the pearl, the more people that selected the specific survey response number. When the pearl along the mode line is Green, the normal cultural implications apply. When the pearl is Red, the UHS element along that axis indicates a cultural inversion and a remediative priority is normally appropriate. Yellow pearls are used along the axis in all positions other than mode line intersections.
