Tailored Training/Learning Events. Organizations often desire to participate
in tailored workshops designed and delivered specifically for them. To meet this
need, ODI has constructed 19 topic-oriented training/learning events covering popular
themes. Although workshop materials are not created in advance, each workshop is
comprised of modularized "lecturettes" augmented by exercises designed
specifically for the client. The needs of the client can normally be accommodated
with workshops ranging from four hours to three days on the selected topic. Delivery
can be either at a client location or at the Quality of WorkLife Center.
The focus on these topic workshops is slightly different in that learning from each
other is nearly as important as the topic information being transferred to the participants.
Client payments for "course" development is minimized or eliminated
entirely.
Materials are adapted to the needs of a specific client through the use of
experiential exercises.
Short topic events are consistent with the larger "system" in use
by ODI.

The WorkLife Learning Environment. All sessions are characteristically
facilitated dialog among peer learners with a predisposed structure based on published
articles and other research materials. In most cases, sessions also include hands-on
exercises that reinforce learning. Dialog is encouraged that connects the session's
learnings with "real life" experiences of the participants.
Off-the-Shelf
Design. Designs incorporate a set sequence of modularized elements. Specific
workshops are a combination of modules gathered for the topic of the workshop. Clients
do not pay directly for design or tailoring. Participants receive a 3-ring binder
containing ample workshop materials.
Research Foundation. As new research
materials or published articles having a bearing on the topic are discovered, these
items are extracted and incorporated into the event materials.
XYZ Case
Study Supplement. Where appropriate, the XYZ, Corporation is used as a notional
backdrop for learning. Active computer files and other materials add a sense of realism
to the learning atmosphere.
Stimulation Gaming. All events include
optional games designed to break the ice, reinforce learning, and just have fun with
the topic.
Tuition. $195 per participant per day. Some workshops may
be extended to one and one-half days.
Conflict Navigation. Disagreement is
a natural part of organization life that must be navigated to assure progress is
achieved, and assure that those surrounded by the turbulence of it are unscathed
by it. Recognizing potential disagreements and using proper labels for whatever is
at the root of the conflict are essential tools for navigating the rapids.
Creating Metrics that
Aid Decision-Making. Decision makers search for aids that will help them
improve the quality of decisions with some assurance. Setting measurements at critical
points in work processes help. Knowing how to recognize essential metrics is a critical
skill. Understanding what to do when measurements fall outside the established range
is imperative. All these concerns will be addressed in this workshop.
Elements of Strategy. The lack of strategy
fills an awkward void when an organization lacks strategic thinkers. This workshop
is designed to acquaint participants with the essential elements of strategy that
must be considered before strategic links are established between current conditions
and the strategic vision. A common language between senior managers is critical to
effective strategy development.
Future Planning Fundamentals.
This one-day workshop introduces the fundamentals of future planning that enable
people to shift today's behaviors in order to meet the expectations of a desired
future. The workshop incorporates popular scenario planning doctrine on three distinct
levels that afford maximum flexibility in plan implementation. Participants will
learn how to modify the generic planning template to their own organization planning
requirements.
Graphic Phacilitation. Using graphics
and graphic constructs to stimulate higher quality decisions and accelerate decisions
by depicting information in more appealing ways is the focus of this workshop. Participants
learn by doing - following a structured format for the entire session. The session
aims to enable next-day use of these powerful techniques.
Hip Pocket Planning. Participants will
learn and use a fast and easily memorized six-part planning model that is appropriate
for a full range of planning activities. Use of the model will provide participants
the confidence they need in spontaneous conditions where fast planning is essential.
It will also enable users to engage in more complex planning projects with equal
assurance of reliable results.
Managing the Forum. Nearly all organizations
today self-diagnose communications problems. This phenomena of fast-paced, complex
organizations with people in ever-increasing levels of isolation is more the product
of lacking a well managed forum than any individual skills. People must have a forum
within which they can talk about important topics and resolve complex problems without
fear of reprisal. Managing the forum is a critical function to achieve success.
Marketing Basics. Connecting the full range
of organization capabilities with potential users (and "buyers") of an
organization's products and services is critical to achieve financial vitality. All
too often, however, busy organizations fail to market themselves properly and find
that, over time, their capabilities are higher than the demand being placed on them.
Without an effective marketing process, the organization will fall into devaluation
eventually. This session provides the basics that would prevent this dysfunctional
cycle.
Mission-Based Structuring. This
workshop has emerged from a far more complex intervention whereby large organizations
are "realigned." A part of that intervention has become consistent and
reliable as a means to structure an organization based on the missions defined as
financial imperative to provide excellent customer service. Within the regimen of
defining missions, structure is examined to assure that strategies link with measurable
work.
Organization Learning Basics.
Deliberate and positive learning by an organization will virtually assure it achieves
its purpose. As simple as the concept might be, it is far more complex to implement
because everything an organization learns is neither deliberate nor positive. Participants
in this sessions will be exposed to some basics on how to increase organization learning
effectiveness.
Prioritizing Everything. When all
missions, strategies, and core work processes have been prioritized, an organization
has an instant response capability allowing it to get and stay aligned so that its
purpose can be achieved. Participants will learn ten essential considerations that
can be applied to determine even the most complex of priority sets. Techniques will
also be demonstrated that can be used for simpler prioritization needs.
Project Management Essentials.
Whether the project requires putting space travelers on Mars, or developing a new
software package, certain project fundamentals must be followed. The participants
in this session will learn these fundamentals and how to apply them to a mock project.
The session will incorporate discussion on how to apply these fundamentals to projects
that participants have experienced. PME
Return on Investment Formulas.
Determining the return-on-investment in projects such as organization development
or soft-skills training is difficult, but can be undertaken with excellent results.
This workshop exposes participants to several potential formulas that work effectively.
Using a case study method, participants engage in an exercise to reinforce their
learning.
Search for Purpose. The clarification
and understanding of purpose is essential to an organization's success. It eliminates
wasteful efforts, and focuses valuable resources on essential tasks. The most effective
techniques leading to clarified purpose, and the subsequent transmission of that
clarity throughout the organization will also be discussed.
Setting Goals and Objectives.
Participants will learn how to set goals and objects so that achieving them is more
certain. Some of the secret lies in wording, some in resourcing the efforts to achieve
them, and some lies in the metrics used to determine progress. Participants will
learn these techniques, and how to apply them in their own organization scenarios.
Synergizing the Elements of Work.
There are five components of work for all tasks. Each component must work synergistically
with all other components to achieve optimum results. Participants in this session
will learn the methods used to measure the effectiveness of each component, and determine
priorities for corrective action. In some cases, this is important for individual
tasks, but more often can be used for collective tasks completed by larger groups
of workers.
Team Development. Creating the "team"
experience and the special bond that emerges from it can be deliberately programmed.
These events can then be called on to produce "team" activities when the
situation is more urgent and essential for project success. Participants will learn
these techniques and how to apply them in any organization and under a variety of
conditions.
Ten Elements of Work Life Culture.
Work life is defined by a common set of ten criteria elements. Understanding these
elements and their universal application to all organizations is a fundamental in
this session. Further, understanding the methodologies that can be engaged to shift
from an undesirable work life culture to a more productive one becomes both skill
and art. This session accomplishes these outcomes.
Task Typing for Effectiveness.
Task Typing is a new field within work life culture technology. This powerful regimen
matches the tasks required of an individual with the individuals natural tendency
to do that work with proficiency. Results assist in combining tasks and individuals
on teams to get the best and most consistent result in any undertaking. Participants
learn these techniques and undertake a project case study to properly align tasks
and individuals who might perform them most effectively.
